Chess, a game of strategy, intellect, and skill, has a rich history spanning over a millennium. From ancient India moving to Persia to modern-day global tournaments, it has evolved significantly, captivating the minds and hearts of millions. In recent years, the chess world has witnessed a revolutionary change with the inception of the Global Chess League (GCL), a global franchise-based tournament that aims to revolutionize competitive chess.
Tech Mahindra Global Chess League is the world’s first and largest official franchise chess league bringing fans together to witness the game from a never-seen perspective. Global Chess League offers a joint team format, featuring both men and women in the same team, competing for the ultimate prize. India has a history of creating massive entertainment sports leagues based on valuation and active viewers, biggest of them all is Indian Premier League for cricket, Pro Kabaddi League for Kabaddi, Indian Super League for Football, and many more.
The inaugural edition of Global Chess League went live from 21st June to 2nd July of 2023 in Dubai, UAE. Middle East in general is increasing its investments in sports with the hosting of the World Chess Championship in Dubai for the year 2021 during the Dubai Expo.
The format for the Global Chess League includes 6 teams in the group stage, with the final contested between the top two teams with the highest match points. Each team competes in a double round-robin, having 10 matches in total.
For team composition, every team has 6 players and at least 2 players in every team must be women, and at least one player must have been born in or after 2002. The teams that participated in the inaugural season of the Grand Chess League are shared below:

- SG Alpine Warriors
Triveni Continental Kings won the finals against upGrad Mumba Masters. For the second edition of 2024, the Grand Chess League will be hosted in London from the 3rd of October to the 12th of October, 2024. We’re excited to see what the second edition of GLC brings for chess lovers. Fun fact, R Ashwin the legendary Indian off-spinner became co-owner with the American Gambits team of Global Chess League.
