Shreyas Royal, an Indian-origin British prodigy born in Bangalore, makes history as the youngest Grandmaster ever. His family moved to South East London when his father got a job offer as an IT project manager. His family faced significant challenges when his father’s work visa expired in 2018, putting their residency in jeopardy.

Shreyas developed an interest in chess at the age of six, introduced by his father. He quickly rose to the ranks, becoming the British U8 champion in 2017. He won his first GM norm in November 2022 at the Bavarian Open held in Germany and followed it up with a second norm in December 2023. In August 2024, Shreyas achieved his final norm, becoming the youngest British Grandmaster and surpassing David Howell’s record set in 2007.
